Welcome to Dorant House

St Albans

About

The Charity was founded by the Will of the late Lionel Annesley Dorant (1880-1942), who was in business in St. Albans as a land and property agent during the first part of the 20th Century. Under the provisions of his Will, the purpose of the Charity was to provide residential accommodation for ‘poor people of good character’ living within the former City of St. Albans. This residential qualification was considered too restrictive, so in 1985 with the consent of the Charity Commission, the area was changed to cover the whole of the City and District of St. Albans.

The original trustees were local businessmen and women and a number of serving councillors. It was decided to build a home to provide accommodation, principally for the elderly. The opening ceremony of Dorant House in 1980 was a great occasion, attended by the Mayor and many local dignitaries. The first residents of Dorant House had already taken up occupation and very proudly took visitors to their flats and on a tour of the building.

There are eleven studio and eight one-bedroom flats on three floors, with lift access. There is a large communal lounge for relaxation, conversation and social occasions, with its own kitchen. A laundry room negates the necessity for individual washing machines. A wheel-chair accessible shower-room is available. At all times, residents can summon help from the warden or call-centre. Dorant House stands in its own grounds which are tended by the warden and interested residents, with normal garden maintenance carried out by a local contractor. The gardens provide a relaxed sitting area on sunny days.

Team

Our Hardworking Team

Meet the team at Dorant House.

Betty Hayward - Chair

Betty was born in St Albans and has remained there since. Before she retired she was a Registered Manager in a care home for the elderly. Betty joined the trustees of Dorant House in 2007 and was elected as Chair a few years later. Our aim is to provide for the tenants an environment where they can feel safe and secure.

Stephen Boffey - Trustee

Stephen Boffey has lived in the St Albans District for more than 20 years. He has developed expertise in the governance of public and charitable sector organisations through past roles and various trustee and director positions. As a Trustee of Dorant House he has particular responsibility for oversight of its finances.

Brigid Brennan - Trustee

Brigid Brennan became a trustee in 2018. She knows the local area well, having moved to St Albans in the late 1950’s, and then to Harpenden in 1969. Having graduated in Law from Nottingham, she joined local solicitors, Turner & Debenhams, now Debenhams Ottaway where she specialised in Family Law. She very much values the work achieved and undertaken by Almshouses and is delighted to be involved with Dorant House.

Gill Clark - Trustee

Gill has lived in Wheathampstead since 1961. She started her career at Forrester House in the centre of St. Albans and then changed careers and went to teacher training college in Bristol and then took up a teaching post at St. Helens Primary School. In the late 1980s she stood for Wheathampstead Parish Council and in 1999 I became a District Councillor representing her village. Amongst the areas she has been involved in she was a member of the Housing Liaison committee and volunteered to represent the council as a trustee to continue that interest.

Chris Lewis - Trustee

Chris has been living in St Albans since 2008. He has spent the last 30 years in the corporate world, enjoying client facing and business administration roles. He has a degree in Russian from University of Wales, Swansea and an MBA from Baynes Business School. Chris joined the team this year as a nominative trustee following his election as District Councillor for Batchwood. Chris works on the Public Realm and Audit and Governance committees.

Jane Singleton - Trustee

After a short spell in retailing and then teaching Jane spent over 25 years working for Herts County Council as an Occupational Therapy Assistant enabling elderly members of the community to live more safely and independently at home. Jane has always been interested in the history and work of our almshouses and has very much enjoyed being a trustee of Dorant House since 2014.

Jo Hayward – Administrator and Clerk to the Trustees

Jo Hayward has lived in St Albans her whole life. She worked for NatWest Bank in St Albans for over 30 years where she gained her accountancy skills and also worked for a local company as their book keeper for over 20 years. Jo has been a dedicated volunteer in the local scouting movement for over 35 years. She has very much enjoyed the varied nature of her role, including getting to know the residents, organising refurbishment of the accommodation and looking after the finances.

Brenda Young - Warden

Brenda has lived her whole life in St Albans. She has been associated with Dorant House for more than 15 years and 10 of these as the part time Warden. Brenda lives on site and acts as a good neighbour to each resident and looks after the building. In an emergency she would call the doctor and any other professional help that was needed and inform the relatives. She supports residents daily to enable them to maintain their independence and quality of life to live on their own as long as possible.
